Multiple Traits

After giving it some thought, I would say that Durkheim is aligned with the control/formal concept due to his functionalist perspective making him more like a lion. Yet Marx a conflict theorist would be a peacock because he definitely does not go with the flow/formal model. Unlike Weber, who appears to go with the flow/informal hypothesis because he does not believe science should be a directive but should bring about consciousness, in return can provoke change. This would portray a dolphin type individual. Simmel, on the other hand is more aligned with the opposite of the control/formal theory, making the theorist more like an owl because he theorizes on the patterns and forms of groups that bring conflict rather it be good or bad. I would be considered a lion but I possess some characteristics that fall under all four types of individuals. Needless to say, I believe some of the theorist especially Simmel would not be as easily categorized as one or another.

You're right, I think many of us have unique qualities and handle situations differently at certain times, this makes us more peacock, dolphin, or owl. Although for us lion is the most predominant one.

I am also a lion, however an overwhelming number of other "traits" accurately describe my actions and behaviors. I believe that many others will have the same results. For this reason I think that although I was identified as a lion, as were many others, we all have some peacock, dolphin and owl in us.

I think you make a great point. I am also categorized as a lion in the last class but I can see myself in all the other categories as well. I think we have moments were we tend to change ourselves to fit into different situations. For this reason I don’t think we fit in just one category but some of us might fit in one more than another.

i must agree that Durkheim is a lion... just like me.. we are strong, competitive, logical and wise. we can tackle so many diffrent obstacles at the same time and still manage to land on our feet. Durkheim had a very strong ideas about how society needs to look at facts instead of focusing on motivations. I tend to want to make sure that i have all the facts before i make a decision.

I have to agree with much that has been said. I too distinguished myself as a lion, yet under certain circumstances can easily cross the line into other territory.
But I still think that Durkheim is more in line with our "lion" group because of the need for rules and regulations...and as we all know...rules and regulations needed.

I have to agree with you all. It seems that of the four theorist Durkheim is the most conservative of all.

I would have to agree with each and everyone of my fellow lions, however, I would like to add the idea that all personality changes are situational. For instance, although I was categorized as a lion, I believe I have been an owl, a sentimental dolphin and a peacock at some point in my life. If I were to determine who best protrays the great characterists of a lion it would be without a doubt Durkheim because he is strong willed, tenacious, yet firm with his decisions and how he viewed society in general.

I agree. In my opinion Durkheim seems to be more like a lion. He supports his ideas with facts and does not focus in emotions.

we all have lion, peacock, owl,and dolphin in us. Prof. Tabor's example of the geese flying in a V formation explains how different perspectives(theorists)can help us work together and give us a better understanding about our society.

that's an interesting look at Durkheim's notion of social facts - simply that social facts are facts and more compelling than motivations.

Agreed - we all fulfill all 4 functions from time to time even while we also have "tendencies" to "be" or "like" or "excel" at certain functions.

I pretty much agree with what everyone else has said. Durkheim is definitely more like a lion than the other theorists. No one has really talked about why it is so great being a "lion". Being a lion helps me stay grounded. I like to deal in facts, truths, and fairness as opposed to morals, traditions, or " religious beliefs". I think that because I am a lion, I am able to think objectively. I try not to let emotion or personal beliefs effect my decision making.

I have to agree as well with everyone. Durheim is a lion. He is strong minded and competitive just like I imagine many of us lions are. He bases his ideas on facts which is the way I am.

I was categorized as a lion but in class as the professor was reading the characteristcis for each animal I didnt just define myself with one animal but with all four of them. At different times of my life i have acted a certain way depending on the situations and each situation possess different characteristics. Although i do agree that Durkheim was a lion because he does not base his work on feelings but rather on the social facts that have an impact on outside factors of our lives.

I may have to disagree with the idea of Durkheim being a lion just because he is to emotional to be controlling.Although we all have acquired a multiple amount of traits, the one that tends to shine is the one that you are more likely to demonstrate. Durkheim, in my opinion is more like a dolphin due to his ideology of consensus, which advocates the notions of niceness, and emotion. I would have to say that the lions are more like Marx because he stresses the idea of competition and greed, which sounds more like the (king of the jungle) lion to me.

I wasn't to surprise to be categories as a lion. I tend to be more controling, agressive and organize than everyone I know. However, it can also be link with being the first born. I feel that I have to set an example for everyone in my family.
