Era of Change or Just a Slip?

President Obama represents physical and structural change in the Unites States. But is it because America is ready to see and treat all ethnicities equally? I don’t think so. Bush’s greatest legacy is to be the "one" who f_ _ked up so bad, it made the American people willing to try anything. In this case, the people elected a black man to be the Commander and Chief of the United States. Don’t get me wrong, President Obama is an awesome man who has charisma and intelligence. I believe he is the one to prove to America you don’t have to be white to lead the United States. I also believe that he is the one to unify the people regardless of ethnicity. However, I can’t help but wonder if this new face of America symbolizes a beginning to opening doors that have been closed for centuries, or will it be a standing pillar of tokenism?

What makes a person a token? The tokeners or the tokenee? Who says? What purpose the lable? To what end the distinction between people on the basis of race, particularly when so many strong individuals are of mixed races - and aren't we all?

MT you make valid points and I would have to agree with everything you said. The point I am trying to make is that I would love for our government to look like a rainbow of colors without one particular ethnicity monopolizing. I believe it is only than we can have a true chance of equality for all people.

Here's a link. Obama says the Middle East 'requires new thinking.' That sounds like Weber - ideas can change the world. Here's the link to copy/paste http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/26/AR2009012602035.html

Everyone makes really valid points. I think that it is sad that the legislative and judicial branches of our government do not accurately portray the diversity of our country. Americans spend too much time worrying about abortions, gays, and guns. We need to focus more on making sure our elected officials are doing the jobs we elected them to do

I don't think President Obama's physical or structural change has anything to do with ethnicity and I honestly don't think him being black helped him win his presidency. I don't think this has anything to do with tokenism at all. I believe we have a man, who is determined and willing, to help us get back on our feet. A man who actually does care about us and someone totally opposite of our former president.

I somewhat agree with all the comments posted so far on this topic. I’m very excited to see what President Obama can bring to the table, because I think that he represents himself as being completely capable. But at the same time, I also can’t help but wonder...if this symbolizes a beginning to opening doors that have been closed for centuries as well. So I assume the only thing to go do is to watch and see what really unfolds in the next few months/years and see what Obama really is going to do.

It is interesting to see how many ideas can come together and make sense. Now with our new president I think there will be change, not an enormous change, but a gradual change that will change lives and transform the notion of race in our country. For several centuries there has been a hush on accepting others for who they are from doors closing for colored citzens and hardships for immigrants. But with a sudden change in chosing our president there will be a better understanding in how to accept others. A question for thought: Can the status quo shift into being equally shared among citizens in the United States???

It is easier to conform to someone when they are "nice". Frankly, Americans voted for someone who was the polar opposite of Bush. However, this does not mean we should ever stop questioning the motives of those in power.
