For question 5... is it ok to choose only three quotes, and match it with three thinkers?

yes - I was thinking 3 would be plenty in 1.5 pages.

Question: I was going over my notes about Robert Merton, and I got stuck when understanding Manifest and Latent functions. So, my question is as follows: Merton states that irrational behavior may be found to have positive functions for a group. Now, what are clear examples of such irrationality creaing positive functions, besides rituals of fertility? (maybe a current example please)

emotional outcry = irrationality.
irrationality creating latent and positive functions:
**public outcy over 8 babies--14 children may give rise to counselling about responsible parenting.
**promising to change human nature (get people to share rather than compete): gave people hope for America
**calling an invasion a war(that cost 20 times what was predicted and lasted 5 times longer than predicted) makes (some) people feel America "won" the Iraq war.
** saying about any war that someone won.
** spending money you don't have on two dozen long stem roses which make the two of you feel so good you get a great new idea for making money
** proposing to spend more money than any group has ever spent before - may save the economy.
** saying "Grace" before a meal makes the attendees feel united.
** making a youngster do something that he feels is irrational and outrages him makes him grow up (tough love)

use contemporary theorists, not classical (Marx, Durkheim, Weber, Simmel) although of course the contemporaries come from the classicals.

I have 1.5 pages for each of my questions I chose. Were we suppose to have 1.5 pages double spaced or single spaced?

double!

I didn't really understand number 6 letter D answer. Can you elaborate on what is meant by that because I'm a little confuse.

are sociologists value-free? can observers see without the traces of the positions from which they see? would a new way of seeing be reflexive - strongly compassionate? Let's look at the MLK video. http://www.remixamerica.org/videos/martin-luther-king-on-malcom-x

i know it's late but i'm having trouble understanding the meaning of question 3 letter E.

oh, well maybe you think bigger forces than people, individuals, or even bigger than things as large as social class are really what "runs" things: BIGGER than these are population explosion, rationality, nature, God.
